How I Turned My Small Backyard Into a Summer Retreat!

It’s hard to believe that such a small space can be transformed into a fun, inviting and practical entertaining spot. This is the story of how I brought my own backyard to life.

When I first saw the size of my yard, I was underwhelmed like most people would be. There was a small fence on either side that divided my neighbours and I, a very small deck off the back of the home that was just big enough for a BBQ, and fresh laid grass. C’est tout! I stared with a blank slate, the gears began to turn.

The first step in this makeover was building a large deck, big enough to hold a gazebo (10’x10′). The stairs and railing from the original deck were taken off and opened up onto the new platform. The gazebo was placed in the back corner with lights strung inside to add ambience when entertaining. I added a candle lit chandelier for soft lighting and an outdoor area rug that grounds the patio furniture. The soft blue colour of the cushions is perfect for this space.

Next I had patio stones installed on the  right of the deck to eliminate the extra grass and create more interest and textures. Smaller stones run in between the larger. The BBQ sits on this level along with extra seating.

A fence and deck not only look great, but will add value to your home.

*Fun fact: The grass is actually AstroTurf! Who knew it could actually look so real? Not to mention low maintenance.

Lastly, I brought plenty of flours  into the space to add colour and warmth. Let the summertime fun begin!
